Project Overview:
Enzygo secured planning permission for Lebanon Farm BESS, a 368MW Battery Energy Storage System in Basildon, Essex.
Located within the Green Belt, the development required a robust planning strategy supported by detailed technical evidence. Enzygo prepared a Grey Belt Statement and coordinated the planning and ecological inputs needed to address environmental constraints and secure appropriate mitigation.
The challenge
The site’s Green Belt location presented a key planning consideration for the proposed battery storage facility.
The application needed to establish a clear policy case for the development while responding to ecological constraints associated with the site. A coordinated approach was required to demonstrate that identified environmental effects could be appropriately managed and mitigated.

Enzygo developed and led the planning strategy for the proposed Battery Energy Storage System.
This included preparing a Grey Belt Statement to support the principle of development and coordinating the ecological evidence required for the application. Our planning and ecology teams worked together to address environmental constraints and identify appropriate mitigation measures.
Lebanon Farm BESS will provide 368MW of battery storage capacity, helping to balance electricity supply and demand and support greater integration of renewable energy into the network.
The project demonstrates how large-scale energy storage infrastructure can be progressed within the Green Belt through a clear planning strategy, detailed policy assessment and coordinated environmental input.
