Flood Risk

Flood Risk Assessment
Our proven Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) approach provides professional, commercially driven solutions for even the most complex developments. Our consultants come from both industry and regulatory backgrounds, bringing their experience to develop practical solutions that meet regulatory expectations. We can provide NPPF Flood Risk Assessments, Tan15 Flood Consequence Assessments, and SEPA Flood Risk Assessments. Our FRA work is often supported by other further works, including drainage strategies (link) and hydraulic modelling (link). We can provide a bespoke approach, providing initial flood risk and scoping assessments before proceeding with detailed flood risk and drainage works. This allows our clients the flexibility to investigate the option for proceeding with complex sites before committing to more detailed works.
Flood Evacuation and Management Plans (FEMPs).
We are highly experienced in supporting clients and businesses on Flood Evacuation Management Plans (FEMPs) to support either planning application requirements, environmental permits, or for insurance requirements. Our plans have continually evolved with industry requirements, have been extensively reviewed by local authority emergency planners and we have also delivered bespoke training to businesses to ensure site managers and operators can act on the plans, including undertaking desktop exercises.
Property Flood Resilience (PFR) Surveys, completed to Environment Agency / CIWEM Foundation Standard.
We undertake surveys pre and post installation of resilience measures to advise and confirm levels of protection required or provided in accordance with the CIRIA C790F Code of Practice.
Sequential and Exception Test
We are experienced in the application of sequential and exception tests for commercial, residential and leisure developments resulting in numerous successful applications.
Expert Witness Services
Our Director level staff provide technical expert witness services to clients and we have contributed to numerous successful appeals on grounds of hydrology, surface and groundwater fl¬ood risk, drainage, geology and hydrogeology
Hydrometry
We can carry out spot measurements of stream flow for key watercourses. We can also provide long-term rainfall monitoring.

Hydraulic Modelling

Our team provides specialist support to projects across the UK, delivering clear, defensible assessments of how water behaves on and around development sites. We work with industry leading platforms including ESTRY-TUFLOW, Flood Modeller and HEC RAS to produce reliable models that meet the requirements of the Environment Agency, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Natural Resources Wales. Our team also delivers robust model hydrology using ReFH2 and WINFAP, ensuring every hydraulic model is built on accurate, traceable and regulator ready inflows following the latest guidance.

Channel/Culvert Capacity Check
A channel or culvert capacity check provides a way to understand how much flow an asset can convey without needing a full hydraulic modelling exercise. It offers a fast assessment of whether an existing or proposed structure has sufficient capacity.
Catchment and Hydrological Assessments
We can provide robust, regulator aligned inflow estimates for hydraulic models. Using industry standard methods such as ReFH2 and FEH statistical analysis, we derive accurate peak flows, hydrographs and design events tailored to each catchment. These inflows form the foundation of reliable 1D/2D hydraulic modelling.
Fluvial & Tidal 1D/2D Hydraulic Modelling
Our fluvial and tidal modelling delivers simulations of river, estuarine and coastal flooding. Using 1D/2D linked hydraulic models, we can assess flood extents, water depths and levels, velocities, and hazard under a full range of design and extreme events. This service provides robust outputs suitable for planning, design, and strategic flood risk management.
Flood Map Challenge Support
We provide clear, defensible evidence to support flood map challenges where existing online Flood Zone mapping may not reflect true site conditions. Through targeted hydraulic modelling, updated hydrology, and detailed sensitivity testing, we help demonstrate where mapping can be refined, corrected or reclassified.
Model Calibration and Validation
Our calibration and validation service aligns hydraulic model performance with observed flood events, gauge data and survey information. We ensure your model behaves realistically, meets regulatory expectations, and provides confidence in all downstream assessments including design, mitigation and risk evaluation.
Breach Analysis
Our breach analysis evaluates the consequences of defence failure, overtopping or structural collapse. Using hydraulic modelling, we can assess flood extents, water depths and levels, velocities, and hazard. This supports emergency planning, resilience strategies, and regulatory submissions requiring robust assessment of worst case conditions.
Rain on Grid (surface water/pluvial) modelling.
Our Rain on Grid modelling provides assessment of surface water flood risk by applying rainfall directly to the 2D grid. This approach captures how rainfall interacts with local topography, ground conditions and watercourse. We identify areas prone to ponding and exceedance flows, helping clients understand surface water risk on development sites, infrastructure corridors and urban environments. Results support drainage design, layout planning and regulatory submissions.
Independent Model Review
Our Independent Model Review service provides an expert, impartial assessment of existing hydraulic and/or hydrological models. We examine model structure, assumptions, parameterisation, hydrology, boundary conditions and results to confirm whether the model is robust, defensible and aligned with current regulatory expectations. This review highlights strengths, identifies weaknesses, and offers targeted recommendations to improve confidence, accuracy and compliance. Ideal for planning submissions, regulatory engagement, due diligence, and quality assurance across fluvial, tidal and surface water modelling.

Water Environment

We provide support on bespoke assessment that attend to water quality assessments to support WFD assessment as well as SuDS monitoring programmes. We provide guidance and assessments on nutrient neutrality requirements. We also aid clients on property flood resilience requirements including surveys and evacuation plans. We also assist with coastal erosion monitoring and assessments in support of applications.

Water Framework Directive (WFD) Assessments.
We provide support in satisfying requirements for Water Framework Directive (WFD) Assessments with support of our multi-disciplinary expertise across ecology. We analyse desk based water quality datasets for monitored watercourse and can provide our own water quality analysis if required as outlined in our capabilities under Water Quality.
Nutrient Neutrality Assessments (NNAs)
We provide assistance to clients with proposed developments located in nutrient vulnerable catchments across the UK. This includes undertaking calculations using Natural England calculators and providing advice on mitigation and credit options to enable development.
Water Quality Monitoring
We provide services to sample and analyse water quality parameters in support of assessments (e.g. WFD, Nutrient Neutrality, SuDS monitoring).
ES Chapter: Water Environment
We can provide input in to EIA reports in the form of Water Environment chapters.
Coastal Erosion
We provide services in assessing coastal erosion impacts of developments that may be located in Coastal Change Management Areas (CCMAs) as part of Coastal Erosion Vulnerability Assessments. We are also equipped and undertake drone image collection and map, in GIS, long term coastal erosion for our clients to supplement local coastal changes reports for erosion hotspots.
